WHAT DO ADD AND ADHD FEEL LIKE?

While specific symptoms of ADD and ADHD may look different for individual people, generally it include some of the following symptoms in each of the following categories:

EMOTIONAL SYMPTOMS

Individuals with ADD or ADHD may experience low frustration tolerance, leading to irritability or anger in challenging situations. Mood swings can occur, with feelings shifting rapidly and often seeming disproportionate to the circumstances. Many struggle with emotional dysregulation, resulting in overwhelming feelings like sadness or anxiety. Sensitivity to criticism may also cause heightened feelings of inadequacy, while low self-esteem often stems from difficulties with focus and organization. Anxiety frequently co-occurs, leading to persistent worries. Additionally, feelings of overwhelm can result in avoidance or procrastination.  Finally, emotional restlessness may manifest as an inability to relax, even in calm environments.

COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS

Individuals with ADD or ADHD experience difficulties with sustained attention, making it hard to focus on tasks or conversations, and often leading to careless mistakes. Many individuals struggle with organization, frequently misplacing items or failing to follow through on plans. Working memory issues can hinder the ability to hold information temporarily, making it difficult to complete multi-step tasks. Additionally, impulsivity may result in hasty decisions or responses, often without fully considering the consequences. Individuals may also experience a tendency to become easily bored, seeking constant stimulation, which can disrupt productivity and lead to frustration.

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS

Physical symptoms of ADHD and ADD can manifest in various ways, affecting an individual’s ability to engage in daily activities. Many individuals experience restlessness or a constant need to be in motion, making it difficult to sit still, especially in calm environments like classrooms or meetings. This can lead to fidgeting, tapping, or other repetitive movements. Additionally, some may have trouble with coordination and may appear clumsy in physical activities. Sleep disturbances, such as difficulty falling or staying asleep, are also common, contributing to daytime fatigue and further impairing focus. These physical symptoms can create challenges in both personal and professional settings, highlighting the importance of understanding the multifaceted nature of ADHD and ADD.

BEHAVIORAL SYMPTOMS

Individuals with ADD or ADHD may struggle with impulsivity, leading to hasty decisions or actions that can disrupt conversations and relationships. They might interrupt others frequently or have difficulty waiting their turn, which can strain friendships and family dynamics. Additionally, some may exhibit poor patience and difficulty adhering to social norms, making it hard to navigate group settings. These symptoms can result in misunderstandings and frustration, both for the individual and those around them. As a result, individuals with ADHD or ADD may feel isolated or misunderstood, underscoring the importance of support and effective communication strategies in fostering healthy relationships.

TYPES OF ATTENTIONAL DISORDERS

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), also know as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder - Predominately Inattentive Type, describes individuals who find it challenging to maintain focus on tasks, leading to difficulties in academic and work settings. They may struggle with organizing their thoughts, which can result in incomplete projects and missed deadlines. This inattentiveness often manifests as forgetfulness in daily routines, such as forgetting appointments or misplacing items. They might also seem disengaged during conversations, leading others to perceive them as disinterested or unmotivated. The constant feeling of being overwhelmed by their inability to focus can contribute to low self-esteem and frustration, making it crucial for them to develop coping strategies tailored to improve attention and organization.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), also know as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder - Predominately Hyperactive/Impulsive Type, is characterized by an intense drive for activity and a tendency to act without considering the consequences. Individuals may find it difficult to sit still, leading to constant movement, such as tapping their feet, pacing, or fidgeting with objects. This behavior can be disruptive in classroom or workplace settings, where remaining seated is often expected. Impulsivity may result in speaking out of turn, interrupting others, or making hasty decisions that can lead to negative outcomes. Socially, this can create challenges, as peers may find it hard to interact comfortably with someone who frequently interrupts or seems overly energetic. The internal struggle to control these impulses can lead to feelings of frustration and embarrassment, emphasizing the importance of structured environments and behavioral strategies.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), also know as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder - Combined Type, is characterized by a mixure of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. This dual challenge can create a complex interplay of difficulties, making it hard to focus on tasks while also managing restlessness and impulsivity. In academic settings, they might begin projects with enthusiasm but struggle to complete them due to distractions or loss of interest. Socially, their impulsive nature can lead to strained relationships, as they may unintentionally dominate conversations or overlook social cues. The constant back-and-forth between distraction and impulsive behavior can be overwhelming, leaving individuals feeling frustrated and misunderstood. This complexity highlights the need for comprehensive approaches that address both sets of symptoms through tailored support and coping mechanisms.

It is important to note that the nuances of life are not always captured in a simple diagnosis. Symptoms of inattention or impulsivity may be associated by one of any number of psychiatric or medical conditions.  Only trained mental health professionals who have completed a comprehensive evaluation with a specific individual can assign a diagnosis. If you are experiencing symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity, it’s important to seek professional help to receive an accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment by a trained ADHD therapist.

DON'T LET WORRY GET IN YOUR WAY

What if I don't want others to know that I am in therapy? Seeking therapy is a courageous and proactive step towards understanding and managing ADHD. The more we talk about these issues, the more we reduce stigma. Many people share similar experiences, and therapy can provide a safe, supportive environment to work through these feelings. With the convenience of online therapy, you can access therapy for the safety of your home or any other private area where you feel safe.

I’m worried about the cost of therapy. We understand that the cost of therapy can be intimidating and a very realistic barrier to treatment for many people. This is why we, at Aspen Grove Wellness, are in network with most major commercial payers and have a radical commitment to helping you access your health insurance benefits. If you would like to know your specific benefits, we recommend that you call the Member Services number on the back of your insurance card.

It already feels like I have such limited time, why should I commit to yet another medical appointment? While you may have learned some self-help strategies over time, chances are that if you are here these strategies are no longer sufficient in managing your symptoms. While self-help strategies can be beneficial, therapy offers personalized guidance, tools, and support that can lead to deeper insights and more effective coping mechanisms. Professionals can help you develop a tailored approach that self-help resources may not provide.
