WHAT IS DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY (DBT)?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a transformative approach to therapy that blends elements of cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices. At its core, DBT aims to help individuals develop skills to manage intense emotions, navigate interpersonal relationships, and build a life worth living. Through a combination of individual therapy, skills training, and phone coaching, DBT equips individuals with practical tools to regulate emotions, tolerate distress, and effectively communicate their needs. With a strong emphasis on acceptance and change, DBT empowers individuals to embrace their experiences with compassion and work towards building a life that aligns with their values and aspirations. This holistic approach to therapy fosters resilience, promotes emotional well-being, and encourages sustainable growth and transformation.

While Aspen Grove Wellness does not currently offer a comprehensive DBT program, we do have providers who are proficient in DBT therapy and DBT skills training.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DBT THERAPY SKILLS?

  1. Reduction in suicidal behaviors: Research has shown that DBT therapy is highly effective in reducing suicidal behaviors among individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and other high-risk populations. Studies have reported significant decreases in suicide attempts and self-harm incidents following DBT therapy.

  2. Improvement in emotion regulation: DBT therapy has been found to significantly improve emotion regulation skills, leading to reduced emotional intensity, impulsivity, and mood instability. Individuals who undergo DBT therapy often report greater emotional stability and a greater ability to cope with distressing emotions.

  3. Enhanced interpersonal relationships: DBT therapy emphasizes interpersonal effectiveness skills, helping individuals develop healthier communication patterns, assertiveness, and conflict resolution strategies. Research has shown that DBT therapy can lead to improvements in social functioning and the quality of relationships.

  4. Reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety: DBT therapy is effective in treating a range of mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety disorders. Studies have demonstrated significant reductions in symptoms of depression and anxiety following DBT therapy, with many individuals experiencing long-term benefits.

  5. Decrease in hospitalizations and crisis interventions: Research indicates that individuals who participate in DBT therapy are less likely to require hospitalization or crisis interventions for mental health-related issues. DBT therapy equips individuals with the skills to manage crises effectively and prevent relapse, leading to fewer emergency room visits and psychiatric hospitalizations.

  6. Increased overall quality of life: DBT therapy has been shown to improve overall quality of life by helping individuals create a life that is meaningful, fulfilling, and in line with their values. Research has found that individuals who undergo DBT therapy report greater satisfaction with life and a higher level of functioning in various domains, including work, relationships, and leisure activities.
