WHAT DOES DEPRESSION FEEL LIKE?

While specific symptoms of depression may look different for individual people, generally the symptoms of depression include some symptoms in each of the following categories:

EMOTIONAL SYMPTOMS

Depressive disorders are often characterized by a range of emotional symptoms, including persistent sadness, hopelessness, and emptiness. Individuals commonly also experience heightened irritability, mood swings, and a general sense of apathy or numbness. Additionally, they may struggle with feelings of worthlessness, guilt, and a lack of self-esteem. These emotional symptoms can significantly impact daily functioning and overall well-being.

COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS

Cognitive symptoms of depressive disorders often involve negative thinking patterns, such as persistent self-criticism, pessimism, and feelings of inadequacy. Individuals may also experience difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering details. Additionally, individuals may anticipating the worst possible outcomes across situations. These cognitive symptoms can impair daily functioning and contribute to the overall distress experienced by individuals with depressive disorders.

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS

Physiological symptoms of depressive disorders can manifest through disruptions in sleep patterns, such as insomnia or oversleeping, as well as changes in appetite or weight. Individuals may also experience fatigue, low energy levels, and physical aches and pains without a clear medical cause. Additionally, depressive disorders can affect libido and sexual function. These physiological symptoms often contribute to the overall burden of depression and can impact daily functioning and quality of life.

BEHAVIORAL SYMPTOMS

Individuals may withdraw from social interactions, leading to increased isolation even from those they love. Depressive disorders can strain relationships, as individuals may struggle to express themselves, withdraw emotionally, or become irritable and distant with loved ones. Additionally, individuals with depression may also exhibit changes in their daily routines, such as disruptions in sleep patterns, appetite changes, or neglecting personal hygiene. Doing anything may, at times, feel completely exhausting.

TYPES OF DEPRESSIVE DISORDERS

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a serious mental health condition characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed that exist for most of the day nearly every day for at least two weeks. Individuals with MDD may also experience changes in appetite or weight, disruptions in sleep patterns, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating or making decisions. Therapy for major depressive disorder aims to provide support, coping strategies, and insight to help individuals navigate their symptoms, improve their quality of life, and regain a sense of hope and purpose.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that occurs at a particular time of year, typically during the fall and winter months when there is less natural sunlight. Symptoms of SAD may include persistent feelings of sadness, fatigue, changes in appetite or weight, and difficulty concentrating. Therapy for SAD often involves light therapy, where individuals are exposed to bright light to mimic natural sunlight, as well as cognitive-behavioral techniques to help manage symptoms and improve mood. By working with a therapist, individuals can develop strategies to cope with SAD and enjoy a better quality of life year-round.

Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD) is a chronic form of depression characterized by long-term feelings of sadness, low self-esteem, and a lack of interest or pleasure in daily activities. Unlike major depressive disorder, the symptoms of PDD are less severe but persist over an extended period, typically lasting for two years or more. Therapy for persistent depressive disorder focuses on helping individuals manage their symptoms, develop coping strategies, and address underlying issues contributing to their chronic depression, ultimately promoting a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Adjustment Disorder with Depressed Mood is a psychological condition characterized by the development of depressive symptoms in response to a significant life stressor or change. These symptoms may include feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in activities. Unlike other depressive disorders, the symptoms of adjustment disorder occur within three months of the stressful event and typically resolve once the individual has adapted to the situation or received appropriate support. Therapy for adjustment disorder with depressed mood focuses on helping individuals cope with the stressor, process their emotions, and develop healthy coping mechanisms to regain emotional balance and resilience.

Premenstrual Mood Dysphoric Disorder is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) characterized by debilitating mood swings, irritability, and depressive symptoms that occur in the days leading up to menstruation. These symptoms significantly interfere with daily functioning and quality of life and typically resolve within a few days of beginning menstruation. Therapy for PMDD focuses on addressing the cyclical nature of symptoms, providing support, and teaching coping strategies to manage mood disturbances effectively. By working with a therapist, individuals can develop personalized approaches to alleviate PMDD symptoms and improve overall well-being.

It is important to note that the nuances of life are not always captured in a simple diagnosis. Many depressive disorders co-exist with other psychiatric conditions, including anxiety and ADHD. Only trained mental health professionals who have completed a comprehensive evaluation with a specific individual can assign a diagnosis.
