WHAT DO RELATIONSHIP ISSUES FEEL LIKE?

While specific challenges may look different for individual people, generally the symptoms of relationship issues include some symptoms in the following categories:

EMOTIONAL SYMPTOMS

Emotional symptoms of relationship issues may include feelings of frustration, sadness, anger, or resentment towards your partner. You may also experience anxiety, insecurity, or fear about the future of your relationship. These emotions can be overwhelming and impact your overall well-being, making it challenging to communicate effectively and maintain a healthy connection with your partner.

COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS

Cognitive symptoms of relationship issues often manifest as negative thought patterns about oneself, one's partner, or the relationship itself. These thoughts may include constant worry, self-doubt, rumination about past conflicts, or distorted beliefs about the relationship's future. Cognitive symptoms can contribute to feelings of stress and confusion, making it difficult to navigate the challenges of the relationship effectively.

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS

Physical symptoms of relationship issues may manifest as changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, headaches, muscle tension, or gastrointestinal problems. Stress and emotional distress from relationship difficulties can impact the body, leading to physical discomfort and health concerns. Paying attention to these physical symptoms can provide valuable insight into the impact of relationship issues on overall well-being.

BEHAVIORAL SYMPTOMS

Behavioral symptoms of relationship issues may include frequent arguments or conflicts, withdrawal from communication or intimacy, difficulty expressing emotions openly, or engaging in destructive behaviors such as substance abuse or infidelity. These symptoms can strain the connection between partners and lead to feelings of distance or disconnection. Recognizing and addressing these behaviors is essential for fostering healthier relationship dynamics and improving overall satisfaction.

You can find healing in connection.

Relationship issues are common and affect individuals and couples of all backgrounds and ages. Research suggests that the majority of the population experiences challenges in their relationships at some point in their lives. While many people may attempt to address these issues on their own, an increasing number are seeking professional help to navigate the complexities of relationship dynamics. Couples counseling or therapy with one of our relationship therapists provides a supportive environment for individuals and couples to explore their concerns, learn effective communication skills, and work towards building stronger, more fulfilling relationships.

DON'T LET WORRY GET IN YOUR WAY

I’m afraid therapy will make things worse. A skilled relationship therapist is trained to handle conflicts and facilitate healthy discussions. The goal is to create a safe space for all parties to express their feelings and work toward solutions, not to exacerbate issues. Couples counseling can help you learn skills to not only manage conflict more effectively but also to invest in the friendship that often gets forgotten over time.

I’m worried about the cost of therapy. We understand that the cost of therapy can be intimidating and a very realistic barrier to treatment for many people. This concern becomes even more valid when someone is considering couples therapy, as many couples therapists do not accept insurance. That is why we, at Aspen Grove Wellness, are in network with most major commercial payers and have a radical commitment to helping you access your health insurance benefits. If you would like to know your specific benefits, we recommend that you call the Member Services number on the back of your insurance card.

What if my partner won't agree to couples counseling? It’s understandable to feel frustrated that your partner isn’t ready to join you in therapy. However, starting individual therapy with a relationship specialist can be incredibly beneficial for you. It can help you gain clarity on your feelings, explore your needs, and develop strategies to improve communication with your partner. Even if your partner doesn’t come to sessions, you can work on your own growth and understanding, which may eventually encourage them to consider joining you later. Taking this step for yourself can lead to positive changes in your relationship dynamic.
