WHAT DOES LOW RESILIENCY FEEL LIKE?

Research indicates a connection between low resiliency and low self-esteem. Individuals with low self-esteem often struggle to cope effectively with stress and adversity, which can diminish their resilience. Low self-esteem can lead to negative thought patterns, making it harder for individuals to believe in their ability to overcome challenges. Conversely, those with higher self-esteem tend to have greater confidence in their coping skills, which enhances their resiliency. This relationship highlights the importance of fostering both self-esteem and resiliency for better mental health outcomes. While specific symptoms of low resiliency and self-esteem may look different for individual people, generally they include some symptoms in the following categories:

EMOTIONAL SYMPTOMS

Emotional symptoms of low resiliency and self-esteem often manifest as feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt, and worthlessness. Individuals may experience frequent sadness, anxiety, or depression as a result of negative self-perceptions. They may also struggle with a persistent fear of failure or rejection, leading to feelings of shame or guilt. These emotional symptoms can significantly impact overall well-being and interpersonal relationships, making it challenging to navigate daily life with confidence and self-assurance.

COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS

Cognitive symptoms of low resiliency and self-esteem often involve negative self-talk and distorted beliefs about oneself. Individuals may engage in constant self-criticism, doubting their abilities and worthiness. They may also have a tendency to compare themselves unfavorably to others, leading to feelings of inferiority and insecurity. These cognitive patterns can contribute to a pervasive sense of self-doubt and undermine one's confidence in various areas of life.

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS

The physiological symptoms associated with low resiliency and self-esteem can include increased stress levels, tension in the muscles, and changes in appetite or sleep patterns. Individuals may experience fatigue, headaches, or gastrointestinal discomfort as a result of chronic stress and anxiety related to their self-esteem. These physiological responses reflect the body's reaction to negative self-perceptions and can impact overall well-being.

BEHAVIORAL SYMPTOMS

Behavioral symptoms of low resiliency and self-esteem often manifest as avoidance of social situations, difficulty asserting boundaries, and seeking validation from others. Individuals may engage in self-sabotaging behaviors, such as procrastination or perfectionism, to cope with feelings of inadequacy. In relationships, they may struggle to trust others, fear rejection, or tolerate criticism, leading to difficulties in forming and maintaining healthy connections. These symptoms can significantly increase one's feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Redefine your worth.

Low self-esteem is a pervasive issue affecting millions worldwide, with research indicating its prevalence across all age groups and demographics. Individuals grappling with low self-esteem often face significant challenges in various aspects of life, including relationships, career advancement, and mental well-being. The impact of low self-esteem extends beyond individual experience, influencing social interactions, decision-making processes, and overall quality of life. Addressing these underlying issues through therapy can lead to profound improvements in self-confidence, resilience, and life satisfaction.

DON'T LET WORRY GET IN YOUR WAY

I feel embarrassed. How do I know if my experiences are severe enough to need therapy? Many people experience low self-esteem, and seeking help is a brave step. A therapist is a trained professional who provides a safe, non-judgmental space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Through resilience counseling, your therapist can help you understand and manage your lived experiences, providing support tailored to your unique situation. You've been doing this alone for too long. It's ok to accept help now.

I’m worried about the cost of therapy. We understand that the cost of therapy can be intimidating and a very realistic barrier to treatment for many people. This is why we, at Aspen Grove Wellness, are in network with most major commercial payers and have a radical commitment to helping you access your health insurance benefits. If you would like to know your specific benefits, we recommend that you call the Member Services number on the back of your insurance card.

I can’t see how therapy will change anything. Many people are surprised by how therapy helps them gain insights and tools to improve their self-esteem. Change is often gradual, and having a supportive guide can make a significant difference in your journey.
